Twas the Day Before Christmas at Glen Ivy

Twas the Day Before Christmas at Glen Ivy

Twas the Day before Christmas and all through the spa,
I took a walk around and here's what I saw.
The towels were laid out on the lounge chairs with care,
With everyone laid on them donned in their swimwear.

Some guests were soaking or getting facials instead,
While visions of red clay mud danced in their heads.
Their faces were glowing with happiness and glee,
Hoping to find a Glen Ivy gift card under their tree.

They all knew Santa was well on his way,
But still stopped for a snack at the Cafe Sole.

Then all of a sudden what did we hear?
That he had just landed with all his reindeer.

As he jumped from his sleigh he looked at his list,

Who should get their gifts first? Maybe a massage therapist.
There weren't any chimneys but Santa didn't fuss,
We'll still all get a gift, every last one of us.

He stopped at each building and the Salon for a minute,
Emptying his sack and everything in it.
Meanwhile, the reindeer wanted increased circulation,
By the end of their visit it was like a two week vacation!

Before he departed he wanted a treat,
So he got a massage (focusing on his feet).
After some Paradise Tea he went on his way,
Exclaiming "Happy Spalidays to all, I wish I could stay!"

HAPPY SPALIDAYS to you and yours from all of us here at Glen Ivy!

Reasons to Visit Glen Ivy During Winter

It's officially the first day of winter, Christmas is just days away and the New Year is right around the corner. As the chillier winter weather begins to settle in here in Southern California, I often find myself struggling to leave the warm comfort of my home but many of our guests claim that now is the best time to be at the spa. Here are a few of our favorite reasons to visit the spa in the winter:

-With the cool weather, the hot spas feel even more relaxing

-There are fewer people than in the summer

-A massage and a soak is the best way to beat the stress of the holiday

-The Grotto body treatment is perfect with dry winter skin

-Things seem to move a little slower here, making it the perfect escape from everyday stress

So whether you are trying to unwind after the holidays, getting ready for the New Year, or simply treating yourself to a day of relaxation, we hope to see you soaking in one of our spas during this fabulous winter season!

Meet the Natives at Glen Ivy Hot Springs

Last holiday season Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa had a few very special visitors from the remote Pacific Island of Tanna. As part of the Travel Channel show "Meet the Natives", these five tribesmen traveled across the country, staying with different families each week to learn about American culture. During their time with a family from Orange County, the five men - Chief Mangau (the Chief of the tribe), Keimua (Head Dancer), Sam (The Medicine Man), Kuai (The Happy Man), and Namus (the Translator) - came to Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa while the Travel Channel filmed their day at the spa, including their experiences receiving massages and pedicures, and getting muddy in Club Mud. It was such a fun day being with the tribe and seeing the awe, excitement, and, at times, question in their eyes - it will be very interesting to see (now that it's been translated with subtitles) what they were actually saying and thinking!

Be sure to tune in to the Meet the Natives episode this Sunday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m. E/P. Until then, read more about their Orange County adventure in this article from the Orange County Register.

Thanksgiving Leftover Recipes from Chef Bill

While I look forward to Thanksgiving dinner, I must admit, I look forward to the abundance of leftovers even more! Too often during the holidays I find myself sneaking into the fridge for a midnight snack. Our own Chef Bill gave me the perfect recipes for turning that Thanksgiving turkey into a second meal! So as you tip-toe into the kitchen (don't worry, we won't tell anyone) make sure to whip up his Holiday Gobbler Sandwich and Strawberry Habanero Jelly. We're sure you will gobble it up! Enjoy!

Holiday Gobbler Sandwich
(Yields 4)

Ingredients:
4-4 ounce piece of turkey breast, sliced thin
8 slices whole wheat bread
8 tablespoons cranberry sauce
8 tablespoons Strawberry Habanero Jelly (recipe follows)
4 tomato slices
4 slices of red onion
4 lettuce leaves, washed

Method:

Make Habanero Jelly and then spread 2 tablespoons of the Strawberry Habanero Jelly on 4 slices of bread. Spread 2 tablespoons of cranberry on the remaining slices of bread. Place 1/4 pound sliced turkey evenly on top of 4 bread slices, top with tomato slice, a red onion slice, lettuce leaf, and the remaining slice of bread. Cut each sandwich diagonally and serve with your favorite beverage.

Strawberry Habanero
(Yields: 1 cup)

Ingredients:

1 cup strawberry jam
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon orange zest
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
1 habanero, minced or as desired

Method:

Place everything in a food processor and pulse to combine (about 15 seconds). Place the jam in a non-corrosive jar with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator or serve as needed.

Celebrate the Holidays with Recipes From Chef Bill

As I sit down to think of ideas for the various holiday meals that will be happening over the next few months, I often find myself in a "food rut." Sure there are the classic dishes that usually grace the table for Thanksgiving and Christmas, but who wants to eat the same thing every year? Glen Ivy's Executive Chef, Bill Wavrin, provided me with some of his best holiday recipes to try out this season--Cranberry Chutney and Orange Scented Sweet Potatoes with Oranges. From Chef Bill's kitchen to yours...enjoy!

Cranberry Chutney
(Yield: 6 1/2 cups)
Ingredients:

8 cups fresh cranberries
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
2 cups fresh squeezed Orange juice
4 cups water
1 lemon, juiced
1/2 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
6 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method:

Place a medium saucepan over medium-high heat with the cranberries and apples and cook until cranberries start to crack (about 2 minutes). Add the remaining ingredients and simmer until cranberries have broken down and chutney is starting to thicken (25 minutes). Season with the brown sugar to taste.

Add to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. It is better overnight so the flavors can marry. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Per 1/4 cup: Calories 40; Protein 0g; Total Fat 0g; Carbohydrate 9g; Dietary Fiber 2g; Cholesterol 0mg; Sodium 0mg.

Orange Scented Sweet Potatoes with Oranges
(Yields: 8 servings)

Ingredients:

2 pounds of sweet potatoes
6 cups fresh orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 orange sliced

Method:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Wash the sweet potatoes and trim 1/4 inch off of the ends. Cut sweet potatoes in half. In a small bowl mix the orange juice with the cinnamon and vanilla.

Place the sweet potatoes in an oven proof dish and pour the juice and top with the orange slices. Cover with lid or foil and place into the hot oven and back for 50 minutes or until the sweet potatoes have cooked through and are tender. Serve hot or cold as a side dish for breakfast or for quick energy.

A Memorable, Meaningful and Enjoyable Experience

Here at Glen Ivy we know how lucky we are to have such amazing guests. Serving you and sharing in your experiences is what makes us happy and excited to come to work so we make it our goal to inspire memorable, meaningful and enjoyable experiences in everyone, every day. It is because of this mission that I wanted to share a letter that a guest sent to us describing her recent visit.

Good morning Meghann,

As you know, we kicked off our time together at Glen Ivy on Tuesday, October 27th and were celebrating a surprise cabana party for my Uncle Ricco's birthday.

We experienced a courteous reception at the front desk and a smooth escort with attentive care from James. From the surprise for my Uncle Ricco and Aunt Westlynn to the exquisite roof top accommodations, ALL of us were absolutely titillated with joy, thanksgiving, and appreciation.

Again, to the entire crew at Glen Ivy, you made the visit for our family and friends from far and near a happy lifelong memory. In fact, when another friend arrived from North Carolina days later, the raves about Glen Ivy persuaded some of the "cabana party" to return the following Monday.

Glen Ivy is truly my personal little paradise which I call the "Emerald Jewel of the Inland Empire." I simply love introducing and encouraging my friends and family to partake in the 'near fantasy' world of birds of paradise, exotic greenery, exfoliating, soothing mud, soothing water, and competent customer service providers that are enriched with new offerings and impeccable cleanliness. I could go on and on!

With sincere appreciation,
Sheila M.

Thank you to all of our fans who continue to show their dedication and support to Glen Ivy. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Q & A: Ask the Esthetician Part 2

Last week I sat down with our primary esthetician here at the Hot Springs to answer some of the most commonly asked questions from guests about basic skincare. This week we turned to Linda again to get some more answers to questions about peels, eye creams, and serums.

Q: What is a peel?
A: A peel is a chemical, herbal or enzyme exfoliation of the epidermis. Peels help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve texture, even skin tone, and treat acne and dehydrated skin conditions. The level of exfoliation ranges from very superficial to aggressive, so talk to your esthetician about your skin care concerns and desired results to help determine the right peel for you. There's a great article on Spa Magazine's website if you want to learn more about peels.

Q: Eye creams are so expensive - do I really need one?
A: Your eyes are the quickest area to show signs of aging so it is important that you do use an eye cream. At Glen Ivy, we use and recommend GloTherapeutics' gloEye Restore - it contains green tea which acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps reduce puffiness caused by fluid retention. It also contains Vitamin K and A to diminish dark undereye circles and crows feet. Not all eye creams are expensive, either, so shop around and find one you like. GloEye Restore is $36 and will last about 4-5 months.

Q: How can I repair my skin after sun exposure and damage?
A: Heal your skin first with an anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. To correct the damage, you need a combination of peels and a professional skin care regimen to do the trick. Consult and esthetician or dermatologist.

Q: What products do I need to add to my skin care routine as my skin matures?
A: You need to add products that exfoliate to encourage cell turnover. Look for products that contain peptides, retinol, and/or alpha hydroxy acids in them.

Q: Are serums necessary in my skin care regimen?
A: Yes! Serums pack the biggest anti-aging and treatment punch. Use a serum if you want to preserve, change or correct any issues with your skin. Serums are the most concentrated piece in a skin care line and will help you achieve the results you're looking to see.

A big thank you to Linda for answering all of our skin-related questions! Make sure to check out our Pomegranate Enzyme Facial available November 1-30 and our Winterberry Facial available December 1-31. If you have more questions, we have more answers - feel free to comment below!

Q & A: Ask the Esthetician

Before I began working in Social Media I worked in the Spa Salon at the Hot Springs. I often overheard conversations the estheticians had with guests regarding facials and skincare. Knowing that we all have questions and concerns about our skin (after all, we all want to look great), I sat down with an esthetician to get some answers about the most commonly asked questions.

Linda Stamp, Primary Esthetician,
Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa

Q:
How often should I be getting a facial?
A: Once a month is ideal so we can do a deeper cleanse and a skin analysis to keep you on track. Most importantly, we'll make sure your routine at home is consistent with your skincare needs and that the products that you are using will achieve your desired results.

Q: What products do I need to be using?
A: Everyone needs a good cleanser, exfoliant and moisturizer. Your cleanser and exfoliant will remove makeup, oil and dead skin to prep for your moisturizer. In turn, your skin will be ready for a more even makeup application.

Q: My pores are really large, can I shrink them?
A: Pore size is genetic, that's what give us our particular skin type (i.e. dry, combination, oily) but the good news is we can make them look smaller! Exfoliating will refine the pore and keep it clear. Scrubs, retinol products and peels will also help pores look smaller. (We'll talk more about peels next week!)

Q: What's the best way to get rid of clogged pores and blackheads on your nose and upper cheeks at home?
A: The best way to get rid of clogged pores and keep them clear is exfoliating. Getting regular facials that include extractions will help rid the pore of congestion; at home using a product with salicylic acid such as gloPurifying Gel Cleanser will help the cells of the epidermis to shed more readily, preventing the pores from clogging.

Next week Linda will be back to answer more questions about peels, eye creams, and serums. Stay tuned and if you have any questions for Linda, post away!

Sunless Tanning

For weeks I've been hearing about the new Infinity Sun Sunless Tanning Service that's now being offered at Glen Ivy Day Spa, Brea so last week Elizabeth and I hopped in the car and made a beeline for Brea to give it a try! The whole team in Brea is really excited about this service and they've raved about the Infinity Sun sunless tanning formula - it's enriched with antioxidants and Vitamin A and E so it helps skin stay hydrated and looking great!

I should start out by saying that Elizabeth and I are both pretty tan but with the summer sun fading away so is the sunkissed look we love.

Here's how it went:
The first step to ensuring an even spray tan is showering with a scrub to fully exfoliate your body. After we scrubbed, the spray tan was applied by a trained spa professional (Melissa, one of the massage therapists did ours - thanks, Melissa!) with a hand-held spray over the entire body (face optional - we did!). The tanning experience was fairly quick, lasting about 10 minutes including the aloe-based neutralizer spray primer to help the skin absorb the tan evenly and last longer. Because a spa professional applies the formula with attention to detail to make sure it's even and smooth, the time will likely vary slightly for every person (unlike a machine). As with any tanning product, you should wait until everything is completely set and dry before redressing. I'd also recommend wearing darker, loose fitting clothes.

Results:
At first Elizabeth and I only noticed a slight difference in our skin tone but the next day our natural-looking golden brown glow was back!

Spray Tan Treatments:
1st Time Introductory Rate.......$49
Single Tan Treatment.......$55
Series of Three.......$145
Series of Five.......$225
Anti-age Upgrade.......$15
Shimmer Upgrade.......$15

If you have a special event coming up or if you want to look tan without the harmful effects of the sun, be sure to try the new Infinity Sun Sunless Tanning at Glen Ivy Day Spa, Brea!

Have you ever had a spray tan or do you use any sunless tanning products? I'd love to hear about your experience and results!

Fall Into Bliss Treatment Featuring Farmhouse Fresh Products

I'm so excited to tell you about the new body treatment for fall at Glen Ivy Day Spas in Brea and Valencia - the Fall Into Bliss body treatment features Farmhouse Fresh products, which are absolutely amazing! The 80 minute full body experience includes a back of body massage with Sweet Cream Body Milk, heated stones on the back, a Sugar Maple Back Scrub, and a full body wrap with a Sweet Honey Mask. Sounds divine, right? Well, there's more! This blissful treatment is finished off with a head, neck and shoulder massage while wrapped in a cocoon of aromatic warmth. ($145)

Yesterday Jennifer and I took a trip up to Spa Salon at the Hot Springs to play with the new Farmhouse Fresh products and we immediately “oooohed” and “ahhhhed” when we saw the display and unbelievably cute packaging (there’s a box that says “Our cows eat cookies”--too fun!). We didn’t waste any more time before we began our usual routine when testing out new products. The salon staff were quickly alongside us encouraging us to “Smell this one!” and “Wait…you HAVE to try that one!”

Since I am obsessed with having smooth skin, I went straight to the trio of Fine Body Scrubs (an Oprah favorite and now mine) available in Sugar Maple, Sweet Cream, and Whipped Honey scents. Yummy! If only there were a scratch and sniff available for computer screens!

Meanwhile, Jennifer was lathering on Sweet Cream Body Milk, smelling her arms, and raving about the adorable the glass pour-spout cruet packaging. Here's a neat detail: the products are signed by ther person that handpackaged them. By the end of our visit to the Spa Salon we came out smelling sweet and feeling soft! In our book, products that give us our sugar fix AND smooth skin are always welcome!

Make sure to try out these products during your next visit to any of the Glen Ivy locations -they're now being used in all our nail services and the cute, handpackaged products also make fabulous gifts so you can spa at home!

National Domestic Violence Awareness Donation Drive

Every October National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed. National, state, and community organizations for violence prevention and victim services mark this month with various events in an effort to help end violence against women and their children.

During the week of October 12-16, Glen Ivy will be helping to raise awareness and donations at each of our locations and the donations will be given to local shelters.

  • Corona Hot Springs- Guests who bring in a new clothing item for any age will receive $10 off spa admission for the day. Donations will be going to the Casa De Paz shelter in Riverside, CA.

  • Brea- Guests who bring in new and unused toiletries will receive $10 off a 50 or 80 minute spa service. Toiletries must be valued at $5 or more. Donations will be going to the Women’s Transitional Living Center in Orange, CA.

  • Valencia- When guests mention that they would like to make a donation to domestic violence awareness, Glen Ivy will donate $10 of the service price to the Domestic Violence Shelter of Santa Clarita. Service must be a 50 or 80 minute service.

Remember, families who go to shelters often leave all of their possessions behind. Any donation will help them to feel secure in their new surroundings. Other ways to help raise awareness is to volunteer your time at a domestic violence agency, be supportive when a battered person tells her story, and be a loving and supportive parent.

At Glen Ivy we strive to elevate life’s experiences and here is your chance to help! We hope that you will join us in the creating awareness and celebrating the strength of battered women and their children.

#1 Reason to Visit Glen Ivy in the Fall Finalists

Congratulations to our finalists for the "#1 Reason to Visit Glen Ivy in the Fall" contest! The winner will receive a "Day in Paradise" which includes two complimentary spa admissions, a 50 minute Glen Ivy facial, a 50 minute Swedish massage, and a few Glen Ivy products to enjoy at home. What a perfect way to enjoy the season!

The finalists are......

Finalist #1 Let me say this, when you need a vacation or a reason to get out of town - this is it! And it was really out of town because we went to the one in Corona (we live in Fullerton). So let me say this, a #1 reason to go to your spa resort in the fall would be: Summer just ended, school and work start on a regular schedule again and it is an absolute reason to give yourself a start to the new season--Caroline B.

Finalist #2 Fall is my favorite time of year, and Glen Ivy is one of my favorite places on earth. There is no better way for me to enjoy that first really crisp fall day than to slip into the warm, soothing hot springs at Glen Ivy and enjoy both the crisp day and the warm, healing water at the same time!--Robin B.

Finalist #3 There are several good reasons for visiting Glen Ivy in the Fall like the weather is still warm in the early months. The drive is a reasonable distance from my home, not too close where it feels like I’m not really “AWAY” yet close enough to get home in time to make dinner or pick up the kiddies. My favorite reason though, has to be the calming effects of the spa itself. Summer is over and the craziness is back, getting up early, getting three kids ready and off to school, the craziness of my work schedule and the planning for the holidays that are sure to be busy and stressful. When you get to the spa, it’s a different world. For a moment in time there is a slowing down. The scenery is that of relaxing and it feels like you’re far away on a vacation someplace remote, maybe an island in the Caribbean or a beach resort. All week, your objective is doing for others, but this is the one moment in time, where the objective is YOU… so quite honestly whether it’s the spring, summer or fall, it’s always a great place to find peace and serenity in this chaotic place, also known as LIFE.--Bridget P.

Finalist #4 The number one best reason to visit Glen Ivy in the fall is it's like the calm before the storm with holidays just around the corner it gives me a much needed break to clear my mind, relax my body before planning for family dinners, gift shopping, and taking the kids trick or treating. The end of the year can get stressful so Glen Ivy is the perfect place to take a one day break from it all!!--Autumn R.

Finalist #5 Every part of Glen Ivy helps me keep my Fall cool: The mineral springs make all my physical parts happy while giving my sometimes unsteady emotions a break. (Glen ivy is single handedly responsible for a significant drop in my road rage!) Lying by the pool sipping a Peach Belini, and recognizing the unique smell of Fall breezing through my hair, helps me get my Zen on. Next, I use the Mineral Mud as my own private therapy session: slopping my problems on, watching them turn to dust, then briskly exfoliating them like you would unwanted sand from the beach. I feel like a little kid playing in the mud while wearing my white dress and not caring if my mom finds me. It's very freeing. Not to mention, in the fall, you kind of match the turning leaves. And there's more! The food is my next stop. The Glen Ivy menu borders on perfection since it tastes like comfort food, yet is amazingly healthy. Ahhh, if only Glen Ivy were open on Thanksgiving! Lastly, I hit every pool and hot tub on the premises’ to solidify the relaxation I have achieved. I prefer the cooler weather: quickly scurrying from tub to tub before getting chilled, clutching a towel in one hand and some bubbly in the other. I am stress free for a few weeks! Or at least until I have to start my holiday shopping.--Lara S.

Slow Up

When recently prompted with a question of ways that spas are helping people slow down in their busy lives, Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa Founder John C. Gray gave the following response:

"I'm a naturally enthusiastic guy, and I can't tell you how many times over the years family, friends, business colleagues, and even strangers have suggested I slow down. I always resisted the idea, and some time ago I finally got that it wasn't about the 'slow' part of the suggestion. It was about the 'down.'

As a kid growing up in suburban New York we boys loved riding our bikes on a narrow asphalt path in a strip of trees we called 'the woods' parallel to Wantagh Parkway. We’d pedal as fast as our ten-year-old legs could go, and I was pretty fast. Whenever I was way out ahead, Doug or George or Dick would yell, 'Hey! Slow up!'

Slow up. Now there’s a message I don’t resist. There’s no down about it! Slow up and let things you rushed by catch up with you. Slow up and feel the breeze in your face. Slow up and see the path ahead as something welcoming, inviting, and not as a race to win. Who wants down when you can be up?

Our long-established vision statement at Glen Ivy Hot Springs is “elevating life experience.” I believe there’s a natural buoyancy in people, and whenever we stop holding on to what’s holding us down, up we go! And slow up. It’s the best way to go."

I really enjoyed hearing John narrate these words to me, especially as I continue to learn and put into practice the principles of spa as a lifestyle - making time for myself, enjoying the company of friends and family, and doing things that are good and good for me.

I hope these words spoke to you too and, hey, slow up.

Today Jennifer and I took a walk over to our Spa Lifestyle Store at the Hot Springs to check out the new products (one of our favorite things to do!). Our goal today: experience Primavera, a new product line of organic skincare and aromatherapy products.

The first thing that caught our eyes while we browsed the testers was the beautiful packaging and display - and that was only the beginning. We could hardly contain ourselves as we opened all of the testers to smell the different scents. Being a bit obsessed with nail care, it didn’t take long for Jennifer to shout “I found my favorite!” There she stood, grinning ear to ear with a bottle of Primavera’s Hand and Nail Cream. Shortly after, I found Primavera’s Lip Balm – a sure addition to my ever-growing lip balm collection. Needless to say, we spent quite some time perusing the entire line!

Next time you’re in our Spa Lifestyle Store, be sure to stop, smell and try – it’s amazing!

Stay tuned, we’ll have more information about Primavera from an expert.

Goodbye, Hello!

For those of you who haven’t met me—I’m Kristen, the Social Media Coordinator for Glen Ivy Spas since February 2009. What a wonderful time I have had delving into the world of Social Media and meeting folks like YOU! It’s been a fun and unique experience and I have learned so much along the way. Today I’m writing this bittersweet post to say farewell-- life is taking me in a new direction (to New York!) and as hard as it is for me to part from my Glen Ivy family, I know there are new opportunities waiting for me when I arrive in the Big Apple.

It has been an absolute pleasure meeting all of you online (and at the spa!) and who knows-- maybe you’ll see more of me as a “guest blogger” on the Glen Ivy Blog! Stay tuned …

Taking my place will be my good friend and colleague Meghann Carreiro! She is new to the social media world (like I was!) but I know she will do a fantastic job filling my shoes! Feel free to connect with her here on the Blog, on the Glen Ivy Facebook page, and follow her at @GlenIvySpas on Twitter!

Got any tips for Meghann? New things you’d like to see? Feel free to post her a comment below!

To your health & happiness,

Kristen

A Delicious Dish for YOU!

Glen Ivy's Executive Chef, Bill Wavrin, recently hosted a cooking demo where he re-created one of his delicious dishes for a large crowd!-- Hummus with Roasted Garlic and Toasted Pitas! Just saying it makes my mouth water ...

Here's Chef in action ...

The final product ...

Here's the recipe for those of you who want to give it a try!

Hummus with Roasted Garlic and Toasted Pitas

Garbanzos or chickpeas, like most beans, are a great source of cholesterol-lowering fiber. In addition, garbanzos' high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal, making these beans a perfect choice for those with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When combined with whole grains such as rice, garbanzos provide virtually fat-free high quality protein. But this is far from what all garbanzos have to offer. Garbanzos are an excellent source of the trace mineral, molybdenum, an integral component of the enzyme sulfite oxidase, which is responsible for detoxifying sulfites. Sulfites are a type of preservative commonly added to prepared foods like delicatessen salads and salad bars. If sulfites are unwittingly consumed, persons who are sensitive to sulfites in these foods may experience rapid heartbeat, headache or disorientation. If you have ever reacted to sulfites, it may be because your molybdenum stores are insufficient to detoxify them.

Yield: 3 cups

Ingredients:

2 cup garbanzo beans cooked
4 cloves roasted garlic
3 tablespoon lemon
2 tablespoons fresh parley
1 tablespoon tahini or sesame seeds
1 tablespoon olive oil
Kosher salt and black pepper to taste

Method:

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste. Store in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to [1] week.

Per 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) serving:
Calories 28; Protein 2g; Total Fat .5g; Saturated Fat 0g; Carbohydrates 4g; Dietary Fiber 1g; Cholesterol 0mg; Sodium 65mg

Father's Day Contest Finalists

Congratulations to the Glen Ivy Father's Day Contest finalists! Be sure to read each story before voting! The winning father will be awarded with a "Day in Paradise," which will include admission and lunch for two, a custom massage and a hot towel facial at Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa! We can't think of a better way to say, "Happy Father's Day Dad!"

Here we go:

Finalist #1 Here is our nomination written by me BUT told by our 5 year old Coby!! "My Dad is the super funniest guy cause when he gets home from work he takes his work clothes off and puts on his sweats and he pulls them up super high to his boobs and says 'Did I do that?' like Erkel does. It is so funny I can't stop laughing and my brother too! You should pick him for dads day because he is the funniest one I know and he always cracks me up and my brother Collin!" Thanks so much. --Coby (5), Collin (4) & Lori

Finalist #2 The funny story that exemplifies him [Dad] most is the "Goat Incident". My dad willingly took part in a school charity auction where the person who raised the most money had to kiss a goat in front of the entire elementary school and parents. My dad, thinking he would never win in a million years, agrees to participate and ends up getting the most donations. So here goes this lifer Marine with his crew cut hair and Semper Fi attitude infront of the whole school planted a big, smelly, smooch right on the goat's lips. Needless to say the entire school erupted in laughter and the parents taunted him. Later he got his revenging chasing my mom around trying to kiss her with his goat germ lips! --Maggie

Finalist #3 At a family reunion a few years ago everyone got a little too ... let's just say carried away. All of the adults were having a great time hanging out then they busted out the karaoke machine, that's when it all started. To my suprise some of my family members were actually good or even better at singing while being intoxicated. Then it was my dad's turn. He stepped up to the plate and began singing "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" to my Uncle Aaron in possibly the highest pitch I've ever heard come out of him. He even had a special dance he made up to go along with it. What made it even better was that he had on his sunglasses and a hat to make him seem cool. He thought he was actually good because everyone was laughing and clapping. The only thing was they were laughing at him, not with him. It was completely embarrassing but it's my dad and I can't help but love him even more when he makes me laugh. To this day we still have incriminating photos of him dancing around the living room with his microphone, a sunburn, and his hat. I love my whacky daddy. --Shana

Finalist #4 Right before Valentine's Day my brother took my diary and read it. My Dad knew I was upset and decided to get me a new diary as a gift for Valentine's Day. He went to the Sanrio Store to get me a Keroppi diary, since that was my favorite character at the time. My Dad was born in Mexico and English is his second language. When he arrived at Sanrio he asked the sales girl if they sold "diarrheas". He couldn't think of the word and kept saying he needed to buy a "diarrhea". He said the sales girl kept looking at him as if he were crazy until finally he explained that he needed a book where people write in it, the sales girl was then able to catch on and he was finally able to buy me a diary for Valentine's Day. --Vanessa

Finalist #5 It started out a regular day and ended as a memorably funny one. My mom told me we were going to Mervyn’s to look for a bra for me. I was excited; it would be my first bra. My family isn’t shy. I was not embarrassed at all that my dad was coming with us. That would soon change. As we walked into the store, we went straight to the panty and bra section. A sales woman walked up to us and asked if we needed any help. My dad answered “we need an over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder please!” I was mortified! I hid behind my mom as she sent him to another section of the store. Needless to say he never went with us again and this is something we will never forget. Yet I love him for giving me moments like this to share with people as it makes my life more fun. --Tonia

Happy Mudder's Day #4

Who knew playing in the mud could be so much fun? Well, I did and so do all those who participated in the last day of the Mudder's Day contest!

For a second today, I thought I was in New York-- minus the parade of taxi cabs, city lights and hot dog stands on every corner of course-- because I was face-to-face with a muddy version of the Statue of Liberty! Impressive Stephanie!

I also ran into a group of girls "muddy-ing their mudder" and even saw Charlie's Muddy Angels today! I saw my fair share of muddy body art as well ;-)

Enjoy the memories...
